Supervisors of Midwives

The role of Supervisors of Midwives is to ensure that your midwifery care is safe and of a high standard, in line with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements. Supervisors of Midwives are experienced midwives who have undertaken additional training to fulfil this role.

Supervisors of Midwives are there to discuss any issues that you have with your care. They can be your champion when you feel that your voice isn't being heard. An example may be if you would like a home birth but are being advised against this for medical reasons. Although most Supervisors of Midwives work in one of the local maternity units, in their role as Supervisor of Midwives they will look independently at your notes and help you decide where is best to have your baby.
